Expressions with -ing

There are lots of fixed expressions in English that go with the -ing form of the verb (gerund). Here are just a few of the most common

There’s no point in … (es hat keinen Sinn)

  • There’s no point in asking him. He doesn’t know.
  • There was no point in waiting for her. She won’t come.

There’s no use … / It’s no use … (es nützt nicht, es bringt nichts)

  • There is nothing we can do about it, so there is no use worrying about it.
  • It is no use calling him again, he won’t answer.

It’s no good … (es bringt nichts …)

  • It’s no good trying to persuade him. He won’t change his mind.
  • It’s no good telling her a lie. She won’t believe you!

It’s worth … / It’s (not) worth … (es lohnt sich (nicht) …)

  • If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right.
  • The cinema is right around the corner, it’s not worth calling a taxi. We can walk.
  • I don’t think that calling a taxi is worth it.
  • Is the movie worth seeing?

have trouble / difficulties “+ing” (Schwierigkeiten haben)

  • Did you have any trouble finding our office?
  • People often have difficulties learning a foreign language.
  • She had a lot of difficulties understanding his accent.

a waste of time / a waste of money

  • The film was horrible. It was a waste of time watching it.
  • It’s a waste of money buying that cheap brand from China.

spend / waste (verbringen, ausgeben/verschwenden, vergeuden)

  • She spent hours trying to explain the situation to him.
  • He wastes a lot of time daydreaming.

be busy (beschäftigt sein, sich für etwas interessieren)

  • I wish I had learned more English at school, but I was too busy hanging out with my friends.
  • I am sorry but I am busy talking on the phone at the moment, can I call you back?

to go +ing (gehen + Tätigkeit)

We use this with a number of activities, especially sports.
go hiking, go fishing, go skiing, go jogging, go running, go bowling, go sailing, etc.

  • I’d like to go skiing this weekend.
  • When did you last go fishing?
  • I have never gone bowling. It could be fun.
