Is emotion even relevant in the age of video on demand, computer gaming, and pills to neutralize any unpleasant feelings you may have?
Who need catharsis when you have viagra?

Are the works of Tennessee Williams still relevant today?

It’s a valid question. After all, it has been almost 40 years since they opened the door to Room 1302 of the Elysee-Hotel just off Broadway and found his lifeless body with the plastic top from a medicine bottle lodged deep in his throat. And even then, in 1983 his plays were no longer financially successful, and the literary critics had abandoned him.

The apex of William’s success occurred in the twilight years of American drama, just before television stormed into our bedrooms, keeping us at home, isolated, mesmerized by late night talk shows.

So, why read plays with characters trapped in economic circumstances striving to break free, helpless, and filled with regret and longing?

Is emotion even relevant in the age of video on demand, computer gaming, and pills to neutralize any unpleasant feelings you may have? Happiness is just one click away.

Even if at the end of this class, you conclude that Williams is completely irrelevant and a waste of time, I guarantee you that you will not have wasted your time. If nothing else, you will have been swept away by the power of the words Williams puts into his characters’ mouths. His words are forceful in their simplicity, useful in their authenticity. They are not old-fashioned, they are timeless, and will cut you like a knife.

The Glass Menagerie

...I turn back time. I reverse it to that quaint period, the thirties, when the huge middle class of America was matriculating in a school for the blind. Their eyes had failed them, or they had failed their eyes, and so they were having their fingers pressed forcibly down on the fiery Braille alphabet of a dissolving economy.

Tom

Nonsense! Laura, I've told you never, never to use that word. Why, you are not crippled, you just got a little defect - hardly noticeable, even! When people have some slight disadvantage like that, they cultivate other things to make up for it - develop charm - and vivacity - and - charm! That's all you have to do! One of the things your father had plenty of - was charm!

Amanda

I don't do anything - much. Oh, please don't think I sit around doing nothing! my glass collection takes up a good deal of time. Glass is something you have to take good care of.
